After Yuzuru Hanyu's short program win yesterday, we heard that the Japan Skating Federation may take action and file a petition for a warning against Denis Ten as a result of an incident in practice yesterday afternoon. I was one of a few journalists in the practice rink when it occurred. And while it is not my place to speculate on Ten's motives, if in fact there were a motive, I can provide you with a rundown of the incident as I remember it (I do not have a video of it) in as factual language as possible.
- Hanyu was in the middle of his short program runthrough when he turned the corner to set up his straight-line pattern into his triple axel
- Ten had just started a spin as Hanyu was turning the corner, and continued to spin as Hanyu was going down the ice
- Hanyu yelled out at Ten and redirected his path to get out of the way of Ten's spin
- Hanyu fell on his triple axel, slid to the boards, and hit the boards with his hand or fist deliberately - he did not slide into or crash into the boards
