VIDEO: #48 of 2016-17 - A step in the right direction

April 30, 2017

48. Marissa Castelli/Mervin Tran USA
2017 Autumn Classic International short program

When they made their international season debut with this fantastic short program at Autumn Classic, you really thought they were going to be off to a stunning season. But Marissa Castelli/Mervin Tran never quite put it together this season for all the potential and quality that they have as a pair.

This short program would end up being their strongest showing of the season, even though it was just weeks after Tran sustained a concussion in training that took him off the ice. This program was a complete breakthrough for them, highlighting their individual skating quality as well as their chemistry together. And that ending sequence into the back inside death spiral is to die for.

It was too bad their season never quite materialized the way that it could have, despite a silver at the U.S. Championships. But all the pieces of the puzzle are there - they just need to figure out how to put them together.
