It had been a year and half since they last competed - Penny Coomes/Nicholas Buckland were on a long road back from a knee injury that Coomes suffered that got more and more complicated during recovery. Originally slated to return to competition halfway through the 2016-17 season, they ended up having to sit out the entire thing because Coomes had to have surgery again in January 2017.

Because they missed the pre-Olympic Worlds and Great Britain had not qualified an Olympic berth for ice dance, they had to qualify at Nebelhorn Trophy at the beginning of the Olympic season.

With Coomes’ knee still not 100%, they went in with question marks. But they emerged with their best scores ever and a spot in PyeongChang. It was a remarkable return, a testament to their resolve and resilience.
