2025 Finlandia Trophy preview (women): Incredible depth

We started this season’s Grand Prix series with one of the strongest women’s fields and we end it with a similarly strong field at Finlandia Trophy this week. Four skaters come in with a season best of over 200 points, three of whom have won Grand Prix titles before, and two of whom come in having won their respective Grand Prix events earlier this season. This event is not just for the medals, but they will also play a huge role in determining the remaining three spots for the women at the Grand Prix Final.

Note: Sofia Samodelkina has reportedly been invited to Finlandia Trophy but has not received her visa for Finland as of Tuesday evening.

GOLD Amber Glenn USA - Glenn made uncharacteristic mistakes on her combo in both of her programs at Cup of China on her way to a fourth consecutive win on the Grand Prix dating back to last season, and she will look to clean those up this week with competition as stacked as this one. She has been otherwise rock solid this season, and her triple axel could be the difference-maker among the contenders this week.

SILVER Mone Chiba JPN - The World bronze medalist has had a very consistent season internationally, breaking 210 in every competition she’s entered. Skate Canada saw a few rotation calls that could make the difference here among the podium contenders. It will be important for her to continue that consistency this week with this field.

BRONZE Rion Sumiyoshi JPN - The past few weeks have been all about Rinka Watanabe and Ami Nakai, who have been putting up some big scores in their quest for an Olympic spot. Lest we forget, Sumiyoshi has put down two international scores over 209 this season, including the 216 that she hit at Grand Prix de France for bronze, a score that would have won at Cup of China and Skate America. Another performance like that this week and she could very well come away with the title.

4. Loena Hendrickx BEL - It’s been a very strong return to competition this season for Hendrickx, who took bronze at both the Olympic Qualifying Event and NHK Trophy coming into Finland. Her short program has been a bit nervy, and she had to dig out of that in Osaka two weeks ago to get on the podium there. In this field, she will need to put down a clean short to have a shot at the podium.

5. Bradie Tennell USA - Fourth at Skate Canada, Tennell is no stranger to Grand Prix medals, though her last one happened before the last Olympics. She has had strong, but inconsistent results since coming back from the injury that took her out of almost an entire season, and the jumps have not quite been the same since. A good performance here would be helpful in her quest toward a second Olympic berth.

6. Rino Matsuike JPN - At her best—and cleanest—Matsuike is a podium contender here. But it hasn’t been a favorable season for her on rotations, so it’s been tough for her to get the credit she deserves on her programs. Rotations or not, be sure to savor the ethereal quality of her two programs this week—they are two of the best.

7. Lorine Schild FRA - A personal best performance at Grand Prix de France vaulted Schild to fifth there, and she will once again be tasked with facing another deep field here at Finlandia Trophy. She’s currently the frontrunner for the one Olympic spot for the French women, and she will want to keep that momentum going with French Nationals incoming.

8. Madeline Schizas CAN - Consistency is of the essence for the three-time Canadian champion, who has had more luck with her short program than with her free skate so far. But at Skate Canada, she had a disastrous short program and then rallied in the free. Can Finlandia be the place where she puts those two together? That sole Canadian spot will likely be determined based on Canadian Nationals results, and she will want to have that momentum and confidence going in.

9. Iida Karhunen FIN - In her first full senior season, Karhunen has put up some strong free skate numbers. She’s got the most difficult programs of the three Finnish women here, and getting a strong performance and a victory over the other two teammates here will be important as they look toward the Finnish Championships.

10. Olivia Lisko FIN - It should be a close battle between Lisko and Karhunen this week. Lisko has had a solid season, particularly in her free skate, which has seen more consistent scores than her short program

11. Selma Valitalo FIN - Valitalo makes her Grand Prix debut in what will be the biggest competition of her career so far. She was 13th at both Nebelhorn Trophy and Volvo Open.
