VIDEO: #9 of 2016-17 - Journeying to the top again

June 6, 2017

9. Patrick Chan CAN
2017 Canadian Championships free skate

They don't call it the Chanadians for nothing. Patrick Chan has really made a case for himself as the greatest male skater that Canada has ever produced - he continued to cement that case here at the Canadian Championships last season with this incredible free skate.

It was his best of the season.

And it came with a little help from his friend, Eric Radford, who composed an absolutely stunning piece for him. And while Chan has done the classics well (Vivaldi, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Puccini) and the modern well (Mack the Knife, Take Five, The Beatles), this is the first time we've seen him go modern classical with Radford's A Journey.

At 26 and in his 10th senior season, Chan may have found a genre that really truly suits him perfectly as a skater of modern elegance. He brought the sport to a new level starting six years ago, and it's incredible to see him find a new gear choreographically. It has become his new masterpiece - and we were lucky to be able to witness it skated this well here at Canadians.
